For healthcare organizations standardized on AWS, HealthLake offers something distinctive: a HIPAA-eligible, managed FHIR R4 data store with healthcare machine learning built in. But turning that into real value — ingestion pipelines, ML features, analytics, and a clean architecture around it — takes AWS and FHIR engineering. Taction Software implements AWS HealthLake end to end: data store setup, ingestion, the ML features, and integration with the rest of your AWS data and analytics stack.
For FHIR work that is not AWS-specific, see our general FHIR API development practice; if you are an Azure shop, see our Azure API for FHIR implementation work.

Why AWS HealthLake for Healthcare FHIR
For AWS-Standardized Healthcare Organizations
If you already run on AWS, HealthLake fits your existing stack, security model, and operations rather than forcing a new platform into the picture.
Built-In ML for Healthcare
HealthLake’s integrated machine learning — including Amazon Comprehend Medical — extracts and standardizes information from clinical text as data lands, a capability that sets it apart from a plain FHIR store. This complements our clinical NLP and AI medical coding work.
Integration With Other AWS Services
HealthLake connects naturally to the AWS analytics and ML ecosystem, which is much of its value for AWS-committed organizations.
BAA-Covered Service
HealthLake is HIPAA-eligible under the AWS BAA, so it can hold PHI when configured correctly — see our HIPAA-compliant development practice.
Our AWS HealthLake Implementation Capabilities
HealthLake Data Store Setup
FHIR R4 resource configuration, custom search parameter setup, and resource type profiling so the store fits your data and query needs.
Data Ingestion Pipelines
S3 bulk import, streaming ingestion, and HL7 v2 to FHIR conversion (via our HL7 integration work) so existing data and live feeds both land cleanly.
HealthLake ML Features
Comprehend Medical integration, automatic coding and standardization, and imaging insights (connecting to our DICOM imaging pipeline work) — turning raw clinical data into structured, coded, analyzable form.
Analytics Integration
Athena querying, QuickSight dashboards, and SageMaker ML pipelines, supporting our healthcare data analytics and healthcare AI work.
HealthLake vs. Alternatives
HealthLake vs. HAPI FHIR on AWS
HealthLake is managed with built-in ML; self-hosting HAPI FHIR on AWS gives more control at the cost of running it yourself. The decision turns on how much you value the managed ML and operations.
HealthLake vs. Azure FHIR
Both are managed cloud FHIR offerings; the deciding factor is usually which cloud you have standardized on. We implement on either and recommend based on your existing footprint.
HealthLake vs. Google Cloud Healthcare API
Same principle — the cloud commitment typically decides it. We build FHIR on AWS, Azure, and GCP and help you choose objectively.
Integration Patterns
We architect HealthLake into the wider AWS environment: a healthcare data lake architecture, real-time streaming with Kinesis, Lambda for FHIR webhooks, and SageMaker for healthcare ML — so HealthLake is the center of a working data platform, not an isolated store.
Engagement Options
We work in three common shapes: a greenfield HealthLake implementation, a migration to HealthLake from another FHIR store, and HealthLake plus a custom integration layer for logic the service does not cover — all on our custom healthcare software foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is HealthLake HIPAA-eligible?
Yes. AWS HealthLake is HIPAA-eligible under the AWS Business Associate Addendum and can store PHI when configured correctly. We implement the encryption, access controls, and logging required as part of the setup, drawing on our data security practice.
How does HealthLake pricing work?
HealthLake pricing is usage-based across data storage, requests, and the ML processing applied to ingested data, plus the downstream AWS services (Athena, QuickSight, SageMaker) you use. We model your expected cost in the workshop so it is clear before you commit.
Can HealthLake support Cures Act APIs?
HealthLake provides the FHIR R4 data-store foundation. The CMS interoperability APIs (CARIN Blue Button, Da Vinci) and SMART authorization are built as an API and auth layer on top of it, which we implement — see our overview of 21st Century Cures Act compliance.
What about FHIR R5?
HealthLake centers on FHIR R4, which is also the version US regulation mandates (US Core, Cures Act), so R4 is the right target for compliance use cases today. We track R5 and architect so a later move is manageable.
